Renting MittaGO

Everything You Need to Know Before Renting a Vehicle

When you don’t own a car but need transportation, renting a vehicle is always an option. However, renting a car is not as simple as it seems, as various factors must be considered, such as the duration of use, the model and brand, the number of passengers, and more.

If you're renting a car for the first time or have done so for vacations, business trips, or special needs, but still have doubts about this service, here is some important information to consider before signing the contract.

Requirements for Renting Vehicles in Chile

The minimum age to rent a car in Chile is 22 years old, and this applies to both the renter and any additional drivers. Drivers under 22 can be accepted if they have a valid driver’s license and pay an additional fee.

The required documentation includes: A valid driver’s license.Identity card or passport of the renter and any additional drivers. Foreign tourists can drive with a valid license from their home country (an international license is not necessary). Chilean citizens and foreign residents must present a valid Chilean license. A credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club, or American Express) with a minimum available balance of $450,000 for cars and $700,000 for SUVs, vans, or trucks, as a guarantee. In Punta Arenas and Coyhaique, the guarantee is UF20.

For prepayments, refer to the website (optional).

If the car is to be returned to a different location from where it was picked up, an additional drop-off fee applies. Generally, rental prices include unlimited mileage, insurance (with or without a deductible), local taxes (IVA), 24-hour emergency service, technical and breakdown assistance, and towing service in areas close to the capital or rental offices.

Finally, it's recommended to return the car with a full tank to avoid extra charges.

Choosing the Model After Signing the Vehicle Rental Contract

Along with the number of passengers and the level of comfort each person requires, the choice of vehicle should also take into account the following considerations.

For those who only wish to visit tourist centers, a small or medium car will suffice.

If you're planning to visit national parks in the mountainous areas or heading to remote places, a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, as there are deductible charges in case of rollovers or tire damage, and the vehicle has enough clearance for accessing such locations. Check the terms and conditions of the contract. For expeditions to deserted regions and areas far from regular roads (such as routes leading to mountain climbs), a four-wheel-drive vehicle (like a 4×4 Pickup or Jeep) is recommended.

For long trips on gravel roads, a truck is generally preferred over a crossover, as trucks are more stable, sturdy, and easier to handle. This choice doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort, as top truck models have spacious cabins (4 doors), seats, and air conditioning. If needed, a canopy or tarp (with additional fees and not available with all operators) can protect luggage from rain and reduce dust.
