5 ways to recycle in companies

There is no time to waste. The global climate crisis we are going through requires concrete and sustained actions from people, companies and communities to curb the consequences of climate change.

Recycling, the challenge of this century

Today, environmental efforts and innovations open hopeful paths in the face of the serious consequences of the sustained depredation of the natural resources of the different ecosystems. However, there is too much to do.

The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015 by 188 nations, sets the first goal of 2030 to reduce the planet's temperature by 1,5°. This is only possible with various actions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint, both individually and collectively.

This objective forces societies and companies to rethink other forms of production and waste management that allow a balance between economic and ecological resources.

In this sense, the environmental management it's a way so that companies actively engage not only in stopping the progress of the crisis, but also in transform the perspective of the production and consumption of services and products. It is no longer just about producing, but about contributing to the improvement of people's lives and their environments.

Recycling is a way to reduce the impacts that productive activity generates in the social and natural environments. Managing waste makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint or the gases that these wastes cause and, therefore, the temperature of the atmosphere.

How to recycle in your company?

Here we propose some elements that can be useful to guide an initial recycling plan in a company:

  1. Assess the need and review the business context. It is a first step to address recycling in a sustained manner over time. Perhaps you can request advice to measure the environmental impact of the company and recognize the amount and type of waste generated.
  1. Another fundamental aspect is the separation of waste at the place where it is generated. Separating waste is vital given the daily amount of waste generated per person, which increases exponentially if it is taken to work spaces.
  1. Plan how waste will be collected, so that everyone who works there knows how it works and where it will take place. This point implies a work of training and awareness so that the actions are understood, having clear objectives and recognized by all people.
  1. Another aspect to consider is know the characteristics of the waste to be separated for recycling. Based on these characteristics, it is possible to arrange the conditions to receive them safely for subsequent withdrawal and management.
  1. The correct separation of the residues increases the possibility that these are recovered and reinserted in the productive system. But it is not enough just to separate, but also to ensure that waste is removed and managed by specialized companies.

What waste can be recycled in companies? Here some examples:

  • Paper and cardboard, of course. They are abundant products, easy to recycle and that can be reused.
  • Plastic containers, one of the most resistant residues to degradation. In general, its separation is simple and the possibilities of reuse are high.
  • Electronic waste, the safety pins of every company. All those electronic products discharged must be recycled. This is key, since they are objects with a high polluting power.
  • Ink cartridges and toners. Highly polluting residues due to the composition of the inks, which contain iron, carbon, chrome, copper, cyanide, acrylics and other plastic particles.
  • Batteries and batteries, which take thousands of years to degrade. That is why it is so important to separate them and place them where they belong, preventing them from contaminating for a long time.
